Snow

I find snow very inspiring. I love how it forces a slow down. People pause and take stock. Literally-- "Do I have enough milk, bread and toilet paper?" There is the excitement of being snowed in with a sweetheart- of not being able to go anywhere or having to go anywhere. Your errands can wait. Chores can wait, too. One of my favorite things to do when there is a snowstorm- besides watching my senior husky frolic like a puppy outside- is to cook. Something that takes a long time in a crockpot is best- a chili or a stew. Nothing beats a good movie to watch while your chili is simmering away...

I think another reason I love snow so much is that in a noisy town like Baltimore, things quiet down when it snows. Noise is dampened by big fluffy flakes. Less people are driving like maniacs around town so the noise from cars and trucks and honking horns is diminished. You don't hear helicoptors buzzing overhead or people yelling down the street to one another. It's almost like the city gets drowsy and falls asleep.

And of course, everything is painted white. All the dirtiness of the city is covered under a blanket of white. At least as far as one can tell, for a little while there is no trash in the streets, no weeds in the yard across the alley, no condom wrappers, no syringes, no beer bottles filled with urine next to a neighbor's stoop. All there are are white silhouettes of buildings, trees and parked cars.

White is a "color" that captivated my imagination early in my endeavors as a painter. It is an elusive color to capture on canvas. Painting teachers and professors always want you to paint white still lives to teach you a lesson in how white objects reflect light from objects that surround them. Snow is the same way. It is affected by the sky, the sun, the moon, the atmosphere and clouds, the time of day, street lamps and head lights.

I am fascinated by it. I love when it snows.

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cookies

I have been making this recipe since I was in preschool. We made these in class around Halloween - Thanksgiving to teach us about measuring and cooking. They were so delicious! It became tradition in my family to make them every autumn.

Preheat oven to 375*.

Blend:

1 cup cooked pumpkin (I use Libby's in the can- plain)
1 egg
1/2 cup vegetable oil

Sift:

1 cup sugar
1 t baking powder
2 cups flour
1 t cinnamon
1/2 t salt

Mix with wet ingredients. Then mix in:

1 t baking soda dissolved in
1 t milk (I have subbed soy)
1 t vanilla extract

Stir in:

1 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Drop well rounded teaspoonfuls on to a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake for 7 - 10 minutes. They are done when they start to brown.

This is a very forgiving basic recipe. I have added different spices (ground ginger, nutmeg, allspice, cardamom), subbed whole wheat flour, added chia seeds and/or rolled oats, raisins, coconut, etc depending on what I have had on hand or been in the mood for. Have fun!

You will find that these are muffiny little cookies that are great for breakfast or dessert!

I have been working on writing a very short, concise biography.

I am a professional artist living in Baltimore City, MD with my Siberian husky and my fat little black cat. I am very proud of my home where I live and work in the Highlandtown Arts & Entertainment District.
I grew up in Long Island, NY where my immediate family still lives. I have always had a love of art and completed my first oil painting (which I still have- some red apples on a green drapery!) at the age of 13. I knew even at that age that I wanted to dedicate my life to visual art. I studied art and music throughout high school.
I left NY in 2001 to attend Maryland Institute College of Art (affectionately known in Baltimore as MICA) where I studied painting with greats such as Mark Karnes, Barry Nemett, Raoul Middleman and Stuart Shils. A sophomore year class with Carl Plansky was a pivotal experience in my development as an artist. The founder of Williamsburg Paints, Plansky introduced me to the poetry of materials and the myriad of pigments that many commercial paintmakers overlook. I came to have a passion for color and light and defined my affinity for the Impressionists and post-Impressionists.
My work hearkens back to a statement made by Joseph Mack- the director of the Huntington School of Fine Arts where I studied as an adolescent: "Don't just paint the the THING you are painting... paint the FEELING." I have never forgotten that and strive to go beyond simply capturing an image.
