The Search for the Real
I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out what my voice is. "What do I have to SAY?" I would ask myself over and over. It would stress me out to think about my subject matter in painting. What am I trying to express? What am I trying to say?
I have been reading Hans Hoffmann's essay 'Search for the Real'. The title of the essay itself begs the question, in my opinion at least, WHAT IS REAL? The short answer to this question is: I don't know. But I do know what I think is real. My understanding right now is that what I have personally experienced, to me, right now, is real. With that understanding I have decided that the question I should be asking myself in terms of creating my artwork is not "What do I have to say?" but is more like "How do I make myself an instrument for expressing my experiences?" The plastic means by which I believe comes closest to being able to represent my vision is painting.
Experience of life and nature is real in my consciousness.
There are no citations but I found this page of quotes by Hans Hoffmann. I am very exciting to continue reading the essay and to take more notes that I can apply to my studio practice.
